NGO: Global Harmonization Initiative
Project: Various GHI Projects
Breaking Down Legal Barriers to Ensure Food Reaches the Hungry
Meet Dr.Diana Bogueva, a research fellow at the Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute and the new president of the Global Harmonization Initiative (GHI), an NGO that supports several projects listed on the FSSF website for donations. Let’s explore what her organization is all about.
What is the primary mission of the Global Harmonization Initiative?
Diana: “The Global Harmonization Initiative’s core mission is to harmonize global food regulations by building consensus on the scientific foundation of food safety legislation. In essence, we aim to standardize regulatory differences worldwide to ensure the global availability of safe, wholesome food for all people.”
Why is it particularly important to donate to these projects right now?
Diana: “Our global food system faces unprecedented challenges, including rising hunger, malnutrition, food safety disparities, environmental degradation, soil pollution, and significant food waste. The list is extensive, and these issues demand urgent action. Supporting our projects now is critical to addressing these pressing global needs.”
Why are GHI’s projects most appropriate for financial support from the global food industry?
Diana: “As an independent, impartial, non-profit organization with over 1,500 members across 70 countries, including 103 ambassadors, we provide a trusted platform for collaboration. Our global reach and scientific credibility make our projects ideal for industry support to drive meaningful change in food safety and security.”
What would you consider one of the most important and significant projects?
Diana: “One standout initiative is the GHI Whistleblower Food Safety Incident Report site, which has garnered attention for its unique role in safeguarding public health. Available in over 35 languages, this platform allows individuals in the food industry, as well as concerned citizens, to anonymously report serious food safety incidents, empowering them to protect consumers worldwide.”
Can you share another project that is currently open for financial support from donors?
Diana: “Another exciting GHI project is our Food Safety Clubs program, launched in February this year. We’ve established two clubs—one in Nigeria and one in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We’re also in discussions to open three more in South Africa, Lebanon, and Mexico. While the situation in Lebanon is challenging due to global circumstances, we’re actively consulting with partners in South Africa and Mexico to identify suitable schools for these clubs, supported by local universities that can provide specialized lectures and enhance educational activities.”
What is the ultimate goal of these Food Safety Club programs?
Diana: “The goal is to empower young people with the knowledge and skills needed to address food safety challenges, including everyday handling and hygiene practices, in their communities. Ultimately, these clubs aim to contribute to a safer global food system.”
Another food safety and security project listed on the FSSF website for donations is the GHI Congress in Rotterdam.
What is the focus of this Congress, and why should donors choose to support it?
Diana: “The theme of our Congress is ‘Connecting Food Security, Safety, Health, and Sustainability: Challenges Ahead.’ It will explore the interconnections between these critical aspects of food systems. With the world facing numerous related challenges, we anticipate a dynamic event with participants joining in person or online for plenary and keynote sessions. The Congress will foster vibrant discussions on the future of food systems, focusing on issues like food security, safety, health, and sustainability. It promises to be a vital platform for shaping solutions to these global challenges, making it a worthy cause for donor support.”
Thank you, Diana Bogueva, president of the Global Harmonization Initiative, for your voluntary contributions to this NGO and your commitment to leading it toward new projects and successes in the coming years, ultimately raising food safety and security standards worldwide.
